Biševo
Blue cave & white sands
West of Komiža the island of Biševo is nowadays all but uninhabited, except in summer when tourists rent isolated houses and folk from Komiža come to tend vines and olives.
Blue Cave
It is however site of one of the Adriatic’s most popular natural attractions, the Blue Cave (Modra špilja), so called because of the blue-turquoise light that fills the space thanks to filtered sunlight seeping through a gap beneath the water’s surface.
The cave can only be visited on small boats operated by local guides – these can be picked up at Meziporat, a small harbour on the eastern side of the island. Visiting the cave is an intimate experience, entering via a narrow fissure through which the boat carefully glides, emerging into a shimmering chamber of constantly changing maritime hues.
