Topsham
Picturesque river-side town
In the estuary port of Topsham 17th century merchants’ houses line a long main street that snakes beside the River Exe. The town is renowned for its sunsets, foodie scene, antiques shops, waterside walks and boat trips.
History
The Romans established a garrison at Topsham, it then grew under the Saxons and in the medieval era. By the 17th and 18th century it was home to rich woollen merchants – their fine houses still line the main street, called the Strand.
Side lanes reveal boatyards, slipways and estuary views. You can explore the town through two downloadable walking trails.
