Wistman’s Wood Walk

A magical forest of moss-covered oaks (3 miles)

Wistman's Wood

A densely-packed pocket of boulders and stunted, twisted trees, Wistman’s Wood is one of the highest oakwoods in Britain. Almost everything in the 3 acre site is smothered with vivid green moss, creating a mystical, magical affect.

Enchanting in dappled sunlight, in mist and at dusk the wood takes on a haunted feel. Unsurprisingly, the woods crop up in Dartmoor legend as being home to the Wisht Hounds – a pack of phantom dogs led by the Devil.

You reach Wistman’s Wood on foot from a small parking layby near the Two Bridges Hotel. It’s a 1.5 mile walk along a signposted trail.

You can either retrace your steps back or extend the route via a number of circular trails – one of the most popular takes in fine views from Longaford and Littaford Tors.
