Dartmoor Myths & Folklore

Pixies & Devils

Dartmoor’s nature changes with the weather. Sunny summer days bring broad views and skylarks. Rain and fog can turn it into a bleak, sometimes menacing place.

Dartmoor has a rich heritage of legends featuring everything from pixies and witches to giants and ghosts.

One of the biggest characters though is the Devil. Also dubbed Old Dewer and linked to the prefix Grim, he was said to hunt with his pack of ghostly Wisht Hounds from Wistmans Wood. Look out for this devilish legacy in local place names.
