Surfing
Waves of people travel west to surf. Cornwall – and to a lesser extent north Devon – have Britain’s best breaks. Newquay famously has epic waves, thanks to west-facing Fistral Beach and the Cribbar Reef. Croyde in north Devon also gets powerful sets.
Gentle waves are better for beginners – as well as Newquay’s surf schools, Discovery Surf and Bantham Beach in South Devon are good places to learn, as is Sennen Surf School in west Cornwall.
And – for when the surf isn’t up – north Devon’s Museum of British Surfing has brilliant surf–themed displays.
