Tarr Steps
Clamber across a Medieval bridge
Tarr Steps is one of Exmoor’s most iconic landmarks. Here a 17-span bridge built out of massive stone slabs stretches for 55m across the River Barle.
The bridge dates from the medieval era and is unusually long for a clapper bridge – they normally have between two and five spans.
The stone slabs weigh up to 2 tonnes and rest on dry stone pillars. Crossing them or plunging your feet into the water is irresistible.
Tarr Steps is also the starting point for some picturesque walks.
