Aubazine
A place of pilgrimage
The village of Aubazine or Aubazines, formerly known as Obazine, is situated on a promontory between the Corrèze and Coiroux rivers.
This peaceful settlement is located just off the main road from Brive to Tulle and was founded during the 12th Century by a group of monks and nuns who joined with the hermit St Stephen to form a Cistercian Abbey.
While the monks and nuns had separate buildings, they operated as one very large religious house until the the Revolution. Even today, despite being very much reduced in size from the the original structure, the Abbey Church and Convent buildings are still very impressive.
Have a close look at the the reclining figure of St Stephen on his tomb inside the Abbey - his face has been disfigured by generations of pilgrims scraping away stone dust in the hope of miraculous intervention.
