Gourdon
Capital of the Bouriane
The pleasant small town of Gourdon is the capital of the Bouriane, the green area which links the Périgord and the Quercy. Consisting of tiers with circular avenues constructed around a small hill, Gourdon offers excellent views over the surrounding countryside.
Gourdon was once the seat of the Gourdon family, some of whom were killed by Richard the Lionheart and many believe that it was one of the Gourdons who was responsible for firing the crossbow bolt which caused Richard's death.
Entering the old town by the Porte du Majou it is a pleasant stroll up rue du Majou to Église St Pierre and the Esplanade, where the old castle used to be, in order to enjoy the views from the belvedere. Don't miss the nearby Grottes de Cougnac and the pretty Bouriane villages.
