The Fitzwilliam Museum
Giant Lion statues dominate the entrance to this impressive museum, which contains over half a million items including paintings, clocks, coins, books, enamels, ceramics, textiles, fans, Ancient Egypt, Greece & Rome as well as Islamic art and Asian art. The Fitzwilliam Museum is part of the University of Cambridge and reflects the vast collections created by the various colleges over the centuries.
Everywhere you look there are unexpected delights such as intricately decorated armour, Limoges enamels, glittering jewellry, Venetian cristallo glass, beautifully decorated medieval manuscripts such as the Psalter & Hours of Isabelle de France, Islamic art, fans, textiles, paintings by Rubens, Canaletto, Titian, Delacroix, Monet, Matisse, Degas, Sickert, a major collection of flower paintings and drawings to name but a few of the many items on display.
Special exhibitions are regularly available such as a display highlighting the work of women throughout the history of art and Gold of the Great Steppes.
