Southwold
A popular Suffolk resort, with its sand and pebble beach and colourful beach huts lining the promenade and edged by gardens. The further away from the centre of town, the quieter the beach which becomes edged by sand dunes rather than concrete paths.
If you want amusement arcades, then you have to head for Southwold Pier as this is the only place to find them. Worth strolling onto the long pier and enjoying the views, as well as visiting the Tim Hunkin’s eccentric inventions display such as an unusual water clock.
Take a tour of the traditional white lighthouse, and explore the cliff top cannons.
A short walk further on, leads to the foot ferry across the river to Walberswick (Easter to October only), or a river trip along the Blyth estuary.
Prebooking is essential if you want to take in a tour of the Adnams Brewery and/or its gin distillery - which always ends with a tasting session!
Nearby attractions: the coastal village of Walberswick, RSPB Minsmere
NT Dunwich Heath
Southwold is accessible by car via the A12 and A1095. There are several car parks around Southwold, but the main beach one is located close to the Pier. The nearest train station is in Lowestoft.
