Colchester
Colchester was Britain’s first city, founded by the Romans nearly 2,000 years ago.
In the centre of Colchester, surrounded by gardens, Colchester Castle is the largest Norman castle keep in Europe, and contains a superb collection of Roman objects including mosaic floors. Lots of interactive activities steering a chariot around Colchester’s Roman Circus or building a Norman archway. Daily Castle roof tours and Roman Vault tours available.
A short drive takes you to the sixty acre Colchester Zoo with over 160 species including Komodo dragons, white rhino, zebra, giraffes, lions and elephants.
Food & Drink
Most food & drink locations are found around the High Street leading up towards the Castle. This is the main trading area and is well served with a variety of fast food outlets, pubs and cafes. Fast food is particularly popular.
Shopping
The high street is very much the centre of Colchester, containing a wide range of independent and well known brands generally at a lower price point. Clothing and household items are particularly evident in this area with some upmarket stores located close to the castle.
