The Balmoral Hotel

Luxury 5-star Edinburgh Landmark (b,l,d; £££)

Balmoral Hotel

This classic turn-of-the 20th-century railway hotel perched above Edinburgh’s Waverley Station has been one of Edinburgh’s finest hotels for over a century.

Inside many of the public rooms have a classic, time-worn feel, but the bedrooms are far more modern and boutique in style.

Unusually, room rates include a range of extras that attract charges at many other luxury hotels. These include a complimentary cell phone during your stay, free internet and in-house movies, and a great buffet breakfast.

Also on site is a reasonably good spa and several dining options which include one of Scotland’s best restaurants – Number One under chef Jeff Bland. Here the French-influenced fine dining is of the highest standard (meal for two with bottle of wine £165).

Trivia

The hotel also has cinematic and literary associations. Much of the Scottish film Hallam Foe is set here, and the principal character beds down in the clock tower. Meanwhile it was it was in room 552 that author J. K. Rowling bedded down when she finished the last words of the last book of the Harry Potter series, as a singed marble bust of Hermes in the room confirms!
