George Street
The dignified heart of the New Town
George Street was designed as the backbone of the New Town and even if Princes Street tends to get more attention, it remains a graceful and important thoroughfare.
Dotted with high-end clothing boutiques; small offices and banks; and designer bars, here's plenty going on here day and night. Yet, perhaps because it's a bit select, the atmosphere is often surprisingly quiet and aloof.
Not so during the August festival season though, when the Assembly Rooms arts venue (this entry's map location) is a major hub for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
