Broughton & Calton

Leith Street, Edinburgh_2013

Architecturally Broughton and Calton continue the work of the New Town, but the bustle here is quite different.

Certainly it's more casual – gone are the offices, clothing boutiques and ritzy bars. Instead there’s a hipper feel to this discreet gay village and the transitional strip of smaller shops that pave the way to the more ragged Leith Walk.

Yet 18th-century glamour still thrives in seclulded mewses and in townhouses that encircle Calton Hill – a hulking mound whose lawns are dotted with grandiose follies and monuments which offers the best bang-for-buck views of the city given the amount of climbing involved. Views extend from the Pentland Hills all the way to sea.

But aside from this Broughton and Calton have few real sights, leaving the districts to specialise in dining and nightlife.
