The Pentlands

Edinburgh's mini-Highlands; walks (30min+)

The Howe

The green and rolling Pentland Hills rise just south of Edinburgh to offer wonderful hillwalking on the doorstep of the capital. There are several summits, reservoirs and woodlands to explore, and many paths are easily peddled on a mountain bike.

One key spot is the Harlaw Reservoir which lies close to a public car park. It's an ideal place from which to start flat, family-friendly walks.

If you'd rather take a bus and are looking for short, steep and scenic walks or just good picnic spots, try the trailhead at the end of Bonaly Road (bus #10 from Princes Street by Waverley Station - direction & stop Bonaly) where there's also a car park.

Capital Views

One of the best shorter circular walks (1hr; 2.5miles/4km) can also be accessed using buses to Hillend from Princes Street (bus #15 to Hillend/Snowsports Centre) outside the National Gallery of Scotland.
