The West End
Edinburgh's smart West End grew initially as a smart extension to The New Town – in British cities the prevailing winds in industrial times meant the most desirable part of any city was its West End, upwind of city smokestacks.
And so the West End grew as a genteel area of dignified townhouses, elegant private gardens and sleepy muses. These still dominate its backstreets, putting most of the action around Lothian Road, and its important junction with Princes Street at its northern end.
Theatre-land
A concentration of theatres has emerged here, including The Traverse and the Royal Lyceum. The former too have great cafes; while food is the central theme of the Edinburgh Farmers' Market held nearby on Sundays.
