Craigmillar Castle

Atmospheric Medieval ruin

Tree in the Castle

There's so much focus on the mighty central Edinburgh Castle, that the one in the working-class district of Craigmillar, three miles south the center, is all too often forgotten.

Craigmillar Castle

Though ruined, it’s still one of Scotland's best preserved Medieval castles and well worth exploring, particularly with kids who’ll probably love to charge around and play hide-and-seek in its grounds.

Edinburgh From Craigmillar Castle

There are also lovely views of Edinburgh, particularly Arthur's Seat & Holyrood Park from the tower house.

Craigmillar

The castle featured in the Outlander TV-series as Ardsmuir Prison, where Jamie was incarcelated.
