Scott Monument
Giant monument to a literary giant

Casting its florid Gothic shadows over Princes Street, the Walter Scott Monument is one of Edinburgh's premier landmarks and so a fitting tribute to one of Scotland's most influential writers.
It’s also great for extraordinary views of the central city and beyond, thanks to 287 steps that climb up its centre.
At 61m/200 ft high, it’s the tallest monument to any writer in the world and was commissioned after the death of Sir Walter Scott in 1832. It designed was by George Meikle Kemp; the statue of Sir Walter in its base by Sir John Steell.
