Pubs, Bars & Drinking
Estonians are enthusiastic drinkers, with beer (õlu) the most popular tipple. Mainstream industrial brands include Saku and the Tartu-brewed A Le Coq, although there has been a revival of small-brewery production in recent years. Among the boutique producers, Tallinn’s Põhjala brewery has established an international reputation.
Most popular of the spirits is vodka (vein), with local brand Viru Valge pretty ubiquitous. Local specialities include hõõgvein (mulled wine) and Vana Tallinn, a syrupy liqueur best consumed with blackcurrant juice or black coffee.
Many pubs also offer food, particularly those attached to inns in the countryside.
