Saaremaa Regional Museum
Local history round-up
Ocupying Kuressaare’s castle keep, Saaremaa Regional Museum (Saaremaa koduloomuuseum) contains a well-presented parade of artefacts covering the history of the island from prehistoric times to the present.
Chunky chain jewelry worn by Iron-Age Estonian chieftains and their molls grab the attention, alongside chalices and silverware once belonging to the Kuressaare bishops. The display devoted to the post-1940 period features uniforms, weapons and newsreel clips throwing the Nazi and Soviet occupations into dramatic relief.
The former castle chapterhouse contains a spectacular fifteenth-century altar with a central scene of St Mary’s Coronation painted by Henning van der Velde of Lübeck.
