Carennac
A Plus Beau Village in the Lot
Carennac in the Lot département on the Dordogne River is one of the prettiest villages on the river and is indeed an official Plus Beau Village.
Apart from the charming nature of the village, it has another claim to fame because the old priory in the centre was at one time occupied by the splendidly named writer François de Salignac de la Mothe-Fénélon who wrote his masterpiece Télémaque whilst at Carennac. In fact one of the landmarks in the village is the Telemachus’ Tower where Fénélon wrote his book.
Whilst in the village don’t miss the amazing 12th Century carved doorway of St-Pierre and also the cloisters of the Priory.
