Collioure
City of Painters and Anchovies
The charming little port of Collioure is the jewel of the Côte Vermeille or Vermillion Coast which stretches from the popular resort of Argelès-sur-Mer to Cerbère on the Spanish border. This beautiful place nestles in a sheltered bay and its main landmarks of the 13th century Château-Royale and Nôtre-Dames-des-Anges look stunning at any time but especially so in the late afternoon sunshine.
Fishing for Anchovies
Collioure is also a fishing port known for its anchovies caught by the fleet of Lateen sailed fishing boats which tie up beneath the Château Royale. These boats are a joy to see even without with their huge triangular sails unfurled but especially so if you are fortunate enough to catch one in full sail returning from their fishing grounds.
