Saint-Cirq-Lapopie

A Plus Beau Village with a View of the Lot

St-Cirq-Lapopie

St-Cirq-Lapopie is perched high on a rocky escarpment a little east of Cahors above the River Lot and facing a semi-circle of white cliffs.

This unusually named village has a most spectacular setting and has unsurprisingly been named one of France’s Plus Beaux Villages. St-Cirq (pronounced Sear) derives its name from the martyrdom of St-Cyr who was killed in modern day Turkey and his relics were brought back by St-Amadour. The other part of the name derives from the La Popie family who were Lords here during Medieval times.

St-Cirq-Lapopie Porte de la Pelisseria

Enter via the Porte de la Pelisseria and wander though ancient narrow streets. Admire the restored old half-timbered houses with their corbelled facades and mullioned windows.

Climb up to the church and wander around the ruins of La Popies old castle which the King Charles VIII ordered to be pulled down in 1487 because he believed it would be impossible to retake if it fell into enemy hands. From here there is a wonderful panorama of the River Lot and the surrounding countryside.

Tip: St-Cirq can get very busy with visitors arriving on coaches during the season so try to go first thing in the morning or during the late afternoon to avoid the crowds.
