Château de Castelnau-Bretenoux
Red stone castle guarding the Dordogne & Cère
The Château de Castelnau-Bretenoux, not to be confused with Castelnaud Château, lies about 2 miles/3km south west of the interesting bastide village of Bretenoux which shares its name.
The red stone castle is a splendid example of the military architecture of the middle ages and stands high above the small village of Prudhomat and the surrounding countryside overlooking the confluence of the Dordogne River and the Cère.
The castle, which is open to the public, was abandoned after the Revolution but it was carefully restored during the early 20th Century.
There is a rather strange connection with the nearby castle at Turenne dating back to the Middle Ages which involves the payment of an egg to the viscount of Turenne and known as Turenne’s Egg!
