Les Eyzies: Museum
The Musée National de la Préhistoire
Located adjacent to the old Château of the barons of Beynac is this purpose built museum of prehistory. Constructed in an overhang shelter of the cliff dominating Les Eyzies, it houses much early artwork and many tools from the era before recorded history.
The collection traces the evolution of flint-cutting throughout the Palaeolithic period to the artwork carried out in the later Stone Age, about 20-36,000 years ago. It includes only items produced by the Neanderthals and Cro-Magnon man. One of the most impressive of the later items on display is a low-relief carving called the Devil’s Furnace. In total there are about 18,000 exhibits and about 6 million items!
Don’t miss the Vézère valley – drive north from Les Eyzies on the D47 towards Montignac and you will pass several prehistoric sites. Nearer to Montignac you will have the opportunity to visit the fabulous Château de Losse and the lovely village of St-Léon-sur-Vézère.
