JULY 2023 LIMOGES & THE TOUR DE FRANCE Be here on July 8th 2023 for a Stage Finish (the 8th) in the Limousin as the riders arrive from their ride accross the beautiful Périgord.
Limoges had rather inauspicious beginnings as a ford over the River Vienne linking the Roman Road from Paris to Toulouse. The Romans named the town Augustoritum and despite its relative lack of importance had an amphitheatre, forum and baths although very little of anything remains.
Rue de la Boucherie
It remained an insignificant local Gallic town called Lemovices after the Romans left which eventually became Limoges. It specialised in run-of -the-mill ceramics until the early 19th century when the introduction of decorated porcelain was to transform its economy. Limoges’ other main claim to fame is that it was the birthplace of Renoir and the home of Balzac and Molière.
