Viaduc de Millau

The World's Tallest Bridge

Viaduc de Millau

This stunning multispan cable-stayed bridge across the Tarn Valley near Millau in the Aveyron département was conceived by engineer Michel Virlogeux and designed by the celebrated English architect Lord Norman Foster.

At 2460m/2690yds long and touching the floor of the valley in only nine places it is in complete harmony with the magnificent surrounding landscape, sitting on only seven pillars. The slender carriageway of the A75 Autoroute supported by stays and mast-like towers has led to it being been likened to a huge yacht.

Millau Viaduct

There are several panoramas of the bridge in the Tarn Valley, for example from the Village de Peyre on the valley floor, but the best view is from the large parking area at the northern end of the bridge which leads to the Sentier des Explorateurs or the Path of the Explorers

Nearby: Check out the Templar village of La Couvertoirade further south along the A75.
