Standing Stones & Menhirs

Alignments at Kermario

One of Brittany’s mysteries is the presence here and there of alignments of standing of standing stones known as ‘Les Alignements’ and tall single stones known as ‘Menhirs’ sometimes several metres high.

###Les Alignements at Menec

Three sets of Alignments can be found at Carnac near the Golfe de Morbihan Menec, Kerlescan and Kermario. Nearby is the Tumulus of Saint Michel and a Menhir known as the Giant of Manio. The Menhir shown in the picture below at Saint-Uzec in Northern Brittany was altered by the Christian Church during the 19th C.

Mehhir at St-Uzec

Nobody really knows why or how they got here - all we know is that they arrived sometime between 5000 and 3000 years BCE!

For those wishing to know more about Prehistory in the area why not check out the Prehistory Museum in Carnac.
