Amiens
Jules Verne was Here!
Amiens is a beautiful northern city, typical of Picardy, the Prefecture of the Somme Département and situated only 120 km/75m north of Paris on the banks the River Somme. Legend has it that it was here that a certain Roman soldier cut his cloak in two, gave half to a beggar, was made Bishop of Tours and later became St. Martin the Patron Saint of France no less!
What to see:
Cathedral Nôtre Dame
The City is distiguished by its amazing Cathédrale Nôtre-Dame built in the stunning Gothic Lanceolate Style during the 13th century. (The wooden steeple is 16th Century) Unsurprisingly a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it has had problems with water ingress from the Somme but some ingenious engineering solutions, including a 16th century Toledo steel brace, are currently doing a fine job!
