Hauts-de-France

Baie de Somme at Quend

The Hauts-de-France coastline includes the well known ports of Boulogne, Calais, St-Valery-sur-Somme and Dunkerque. Arguably the most interesting is Boulogne with its walled upper town but inland the Cities of Arras, Lille, Amiens, Abbeville, Beauvais and Laon are also fascinating places to visit.

Cathédrale-St-Pirre at Beauvais Picardie

Cathédrale St-Pierre at Beauvais in the Oise

This region was heavily involved in the carnage of WWI which is evidenced today by the many war cemeteries and a visit to the Canadian Memorial at Vimy Ridge where you can also see examples of the trenches and tunnels used by the troops which make for a very sobering visit.

Whilst you are in ancient Picardie don’t miss the Château at Compiègne not far from Laon and the stunning Château on the water at Chantilly. Also make sure that you check out the charming Plus Beau Village of Gerberoy
