Picardy’s Plus Beau Village
The village of 1000 rose bushes is how this beautiful village near Beauvais in the département of the Oise is known and it is no accident that it is one of France’s Plus Beaux Villages. In fact it is the only one in Picardy!
It’s not just roses that are abundant - you’ll find hydrangeas, wysteria and even a small vineyard here. Not surprisingly artists love the place - Henri Le Sidaner created terraced gardens in an abandoned orchard.
Well before there was a Plus Beau Village here there was a Castle and the ruins can still be seen. In 1078-79 Robert Curthose defeated his father William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy as well as King of England, on this very spot. Since then the village has grown especially during the 18th and 19th centuries, with cobbled lanes and colourful half-timbered houses all developing around the Medieval Collégiale St-Pierre,
