Arguably the most famous, or some would say notorious, figure of 11th C. northern European History, William the Conqueror was born here circa 1028, out of wedlock hence one of his alternative titles William the Bastard.

This fairly ordinary little town on the River Ante in the Calvados Départément in the Suisse Normande, about 32km/20mi SE of Caen has had quite a chequered history. Capital of the Dukes of Normandy for a while, the Castle and square keep were built mostly by Henry I, William’s youngest son.
