Hydra
The island with no motorised transport
One of them most cosmopolitan Greek islands, Hydra has a ban on motorised vehicles, hence retaining its charm. People get around by walking, water taxis between the bays or using donkeys or mules.
Its charm inspired singer song writer Leonard Cohen to buy a holiday home here.
As you pull into the main harbour upon your arrival, you’ll notice the beautiful architecture of the old mansion houses standing out on the hills. The most impressive is the Historical Archives Museum in the port that contains various memorabilia from the revolutionary period of Greece within a stone mansion.
Beaches aren’t golden and sandy on Hydra, but indeed, this lends to its charm. They’re pebbled with green pine tree surroundings them and reachable either by water taxi or walking the various mule paths. At only 25 sq miles, Hydra isn’t a large island anyway, so it’s possible to see it in a day. Many people swim from the rocky platforms - the water’s crystal clear in green and blue hues.
