Greek Islands

night view of the town of Naxos fro Port

With over 6000 Greek islands – and only 227 inhabited – it’s impossible to cover all of them here. Most are varied and beautiful in different ways, but here are a few of the more popular ones, along with a few lesser-known gems, to help you plan your trip.

The islands are sorted by island groups, the classic island-hopping isles are the Cyclades, whereas the Dodecanese islands offer popular package deals and independent get aways as well as the Ionian Islands

Crete remains an all time favourite, whereas more off the beaten track are the Saronic Islands, the Sporades and North Eastern Aegean; the Saronic Islands often overlooked due to their close proximity to Athens, mistakenly making people think they’re not ‘far enough’ to be a ‘proper’ island break – yet they make a good day and/or weekend trip from Athens.

Some of the main islands are serviced by airports, others accessible by excellent ferry services mainly originating from the Athens ports of Piraeus or Lavrio.
