Crete
The southernmost and largest of the Greek islands, Crete is also the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean. Its southern geographical location, lying as it does in the Lybian Sea, means it never really gets very cold in the winter, temperatures averaging 5-6 Celcius in the winter months and high 20’s in the summer.
With a diverse range of nature and outdoor activities such as hiking the Samaria Gorge or exploring the White Mountains on horseback to taking a boat trip to Spinalonga Island, an old leper colony, or experiencing the many beaches on offer such as the popular Elafonissi Beach, Crete really does have something to offer all tastes: for couples, groups or families.
The capital – Heraklion has the largest port and the Minoan Palace of Knossos, with more traditional Chania – with its Old Town and cobbled streets a favourite destination. The town of Rethymno has great architecture and several monasteries.
