Chania
Famous for its Medieval Town
A region/prefecture and town, Chania is located to the west of Crete and offers many popular beaches such as Elafonissi Beach - Crete and Balos, yet it’s the Old Town of the town itself that’s so impressive.
Chania Old Town
Chania Town is the second largest in Crete after Heraklion and one of the oldest on the island. The Venetian era characterises the architecture of the Old Town with many old houses now operating as tavernas or coffee shops.
The Venetian Port, with its many narrow cobbled streets and Firkas Fortress–now home to the Maritime Museum of Crete–is a popular spot to stroll around, not least because of the lighthouse found at the entrance to the port–one of the oldest in the world built by the Venetians around 1595-1601. It’s a great spot to watch the sun set.
