Rethymno
Venetian architecture & picturesque port
A prefecture / area of Crete that lies in the west of the island, between Chania and Heraklion, Rethymno is popular for its Byzantine churches, archaeological sites and stunning beach resorts such as Bali and Plakias.
Rethymno Town
The capital is Rethymno Town, guarded from above by the Fortress, built between 1540 and 1570 by the Venetians and still intact, retaining much of its splendour and housing within its walls an Orthodox chapel and the Ibraham Han Mosque.
You’ll also find the Theatre of Erofili which showcases several cultural events over the summer.
As with many destinations on Greek islands, evidence of the Ottoman period can be seen, no less so than in Rethymno Town with its various Mosques.
