Epirus
Epirus is located in the north west of the mainland and has some beautiful destinations such as Parga–growing in popularity–and quaint mountainous villages as clustered in the Zagorochoria area.
Ioannina–located on a beautiful lake with a rich past–is also a favourite.
Trekking
Due to the mountainous and woodland surroundings, there are some gorgeous treks and hikes to be had, especially from the lake town of Ioannina. Trekking Hellas provides excellent guides.
Even so, it’s often overlooked as a region and shouldn’t be. It’s a hidden gem.
How to get there
Fly: There are two airports in the region: At Ioannina, which only accepts domestic flights from Athens and Preveza, on the mainland near the Ionian Islands location of Lefkada which accepts European charter flights in the summer.
