Mystras
Ancient Byzantine Village of the Peloponnese
Near the town of Sparti (not to be confused with Sparta which is near Athens), The Castle Town of Mystras is a unique place to visit in the Peloponnese as in the Byzantine period, it was the second most important place after Constantinople.
Archeological site
As Sparti developed in the 19th century, people gradually abandoned Mystras, leaving it now a small traditional village and one of the most important archaeological sites in the country, a protected World Heritage Site.
Ancient Byzantine Palaces, churches and monasteries plus a cute village lifestyle await (people gradually filtered back in)–a visit to Mystras is a must if you’re looking for a quiet, traditional pace of life and a unique Greek experience.
