Aberdeen Sampan Tours
Close-up look at the fisherfolk
Aberdeen used to be a quiet little village, famous for its naturally protected harbor and fleet of fishing junks belonging to families who had spent most of their lives working and living on the water. During the 1980s, however, the government built huge housing estates on Aberdeen’s surrounding hillsides, and many of the fisherfolk moved to apartments.
Although yachts now crowd the harbor, a flotilla of fishing boats remain, home to extended families and their pet dogs. If you want a close-up view (read photo-op) of a way of life that will probably disappear this century, opt for one of the many sampans (water taxis) along the Aberdeen waterfront promenade, owned by wizened women who try their darndest to get you on their boat. Your informal boat tour will last about 20 minutes, and on slow days you can probably bargain.
HK$50-HK$80 per person, depending on the number in your group and your bargaining powers
