Mido Cafe
Scruffy Suzie-Wong-era diner (b,l,d; $)
You can tell right off that Mido Cafe has been here a while (since 1950, in fact), and once you’re inside, you’ll see that they haven’t done much to change the place either. Head straight upstairs for the best views of the Tin Hau Temple across the street, and then order from the limited English menu that offers a varied mix of Chinese dishes and the cafe’s take on Western fare, like curry chicken, ham and egg sandwich and fried noodles with sliced pork. Wash it all down with milk tea. Note that no credit cards are accepted, and there’s a minimum order of HK$20 per person.
If you happen to get a glance into the kitchen on the way to the bathroom, you’ll see why tourists uninitiated into the more rustic side of travel might feel uneasy dining here. But Mido Cafe is an icon, and it’s been used as a setting in many Hong Kong movies. In any case, you don’t come here for the food, but rather for the experience and the upstairs view.
