All you ever wanted to know about The Peak Tram
The Peak Tram has been lugging passengers to Victoria Peak since 1888, when it became Asia’s first funicular.
Back then it was powered by coal-fired steam boilers and carried 30 passengers seated in three classes (the first two seats were reserved for Hong Kong’s governor). In 1926 the tram became electric, and in 1989 it acquired its present Swiss-made cars.
If you’re interested in the tram’s history, stop by the Peak Tram Historical Gallery in the Peak Tram Lower Terminus in Central, where you can see a replica of the first carriage and memorabilia from the tram’s long history just before boarding the Peak Tram.
