The Wanch
Hong Kong Institution with free live Music ($$)
This unpretentious bar has been offering free live music nightly since 1987. Supporting both local and international acts, The Wanch offers a wide range of music, from rock and jazz to blues and folk.
Although it occupies what was once a topless nightclub in a district known for its strip shows, this differs from many other bars in Wan Chai in that it is serious about its music and is not a pickup bar, making it a safe haven also for female music lovers traveling solo.
I also like The Wanch because it pays tribute to Hong Kong’s history, with photographs of old Hong Kong, decor that highlights the Star Ferry and the trams (there are eve old original tram seats) and lobby posters and prints from movies filmed in Hong Kong.
Highly recommended for a night out in Wan Chai, though note that food is very limited, so eat before you come.
