Greensburg
A tree grows through the courthouse
The 1859 Decatur County Courthouse in Historic Tower Tree Square in Greensburg, now probably best known as the Indiana courthouse where a tree is growing out of the top floor. It was the site of the State of Indiana vs. Luther Donnell who was sued for helping a slave named Caroline and her four children, ages 12 to 2, escape.
Donnell was convicted and ordered to pay for the cost of the slaves, but the case was later reversed by the Indiana Supreme Court and Caroline and her four children arrived safely in Canada.
Art on the Square Gallery, a collaboration between the Arts & Cultural Council of Decatur County and the Tree City Artists, has special shows, art gallery, and also art classes.
Set upon the highest point in scenic Decatur County, Highpoint Orchard and Farm Market, located just outside of Greensburg, is lush with fruit ladened orchards and a 19th century Federal style brick home.
