Eleutherian College
1848: educational freedom for all
Just 10 miles northwest of the beautiful Ohio River city of Madison is Historic Eleutherian College, located in the tiny hamlet of Lancaster.
Take a tour of the college, which opened in 1848 and was the first in Indiana to admit students regardless of race and gender.
Now a National Historic Landmark, it was the first stop north of Madison on the Underground Railroad in Indiana and its name comes from the Greek word eleutherous meaning freedom or equality.
Also on the property is the Lyman Hoyt House. Hoyt was a conductor on the UGRR and an officer in the Neil‘s Creek Anti-Slavery Society. The residence is in the initial stages of restoration and is open for tours by appointment only.
