Gnaw Bone
Persimmon Pudding & Award-Winning Wine
Just east of Nashville and north of Story and Stone Head is the tiny hamlet of Gnawbone once home to a sorghum mill that was long transformed into a general store.
The old sorghum mill, which was once run by horse or mule power, still stands in the front of the building. The horse rotation would squeeze the juice out of the cane stalks which were then boiled down to create syrup. And if you're wondering what’s sorghum—we don’t blame you—it’s not much used now days but at one time it was the most common sweetener in the country. That’s because sugar was so expensive that only rich people used it and they kept it locked up.
Brown County Winery specializes in wines that use Indiana grapes and fruits such as their Strawberry Wine, Cranberry Apple Wine and Blackberry Encore which is fortified with brandy. The winery, which has a great tasting room, is in a new building nestled into the side of the road and surrounded by trees.
