Hesston
For railroad buffs & foodies (d; $$$)
Tucked away on a country road north of LaPorte, the Heston Supper Club is a big draw for visiting foodies.
Once a roadside tavern in the tiny town of Hesston (much of which is now just history), owners Tim & Jackie Ohlund purchased the 1940s tavern, almost 30 years ago.
The Heston Supper Club, known for their prime rib (cuts range in size up to 40 ounces), recently won the Beef Cattleman's Association "Best of Beef" award and their wine list garnered the Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator.
Heston Steam Museum
While in Heston, visit the Hesston Steam Museum which hosts a great collection of railroad memorabilia and offers several tourist train excursions during the year as well as a fun fall festival.
The museum's Annual Labor Day Weekend Steam & Power Show, in its sixth decade, showcases such historic equipment as the gigantic 1913 International Harvester Mogul 30-60 tractor, weighing approximately 23,000 pounds and only one of seven 30-60 Moguls left in the world.
