Huddleston Farm
Old time flavors
The Huddleston Farm House Inn Museum, near Cambridge City, recaptures a moment in time. The farmhouse, built in 1841, was home to John and Susannah Huddleston and their 11 children—yes, you read that right. It sits on a rise above the National Road, a State and National Scenic Byway that stretches 824 miles from Maryland to Illinois.
Without nearby grocery stores, Mrs. Huddleston would have had to rely upon what they raised on the farm. Fresh meat would be plentiful because farmers butchered in early winter, but little milk would be had as cows were pregnant during the winter. The only fresh vegetables available were those stored in the root cellar. Food would have been cooked over the open fireplace. Local, so favored now in restaurants, would have been the only choice for food.
Indiana Landmarks which owns and operates the house, offers tours of the Huddleston Farmhouse, National Road Heritage Site exhibits, and barn are open by appointment; contact east@indianalandmarks.org or call 765-478-3172.
