Most covered bridges, like the Huffman Bridge located near the old Huffman Mill frequented by Abraham Lincoln, in Indiana were built between 1856 and 1922. They were designed to protect travelers from the elements, approximately 1500 bridges still exist in the United States and about 90 of them are in Indiana.
The Huffman Bridge, built by William T. Washer of nearby Troy, cost $5,700 wasn't built until 1864. Still standing today, it marks the area where Lincoln used to bring the grain to be ground. Located on County Road 1490 North.
