Westport
Celebrate the bridge
Celebrate the renovation of the Westport Covered Bridge, about a mile outside of Westport. The bridge, built in 1880 by A. M. Kennedy & Sons, whose base of operations was in nearby Rush County, is the focus of the annual Westport Covered Bridge Festival held each June.
Starting off at the town park, the Covered Bridge Festival Parade travels all the way to the bridge. Here, ducklings are released from the new bridge downstream from the covered bridge.
The ducklings float down Sand Creek to the town water system dam, a distance of 150 yards, or so.
There are two fun for foodies food events on the bridge. The Kiwanis breakfast consists of scrambled eggs, sausage, biscuits, and sausage gravy, with coffee and orange juice. No fixed price is charged, but good will offerings are accepted. All donations help support Kiwanis' maintenance of the town park and ball diamond in town, and other civic activities that they perform.
Then there's the pork chop dinner which includes thick pork chops from a neighboring farm accompanied by scalloped potatoes, a vegetable, like green beans, apple sauce, dinner roll and some kind of desert - cookie, brownie, piece of cake or something like that. As added fun (and calories) there's a cake walk with donated cakes ad a grand prize cake is a half a sheet cake with an image of the covered bridge on it.
In the summer, stop by Harper Valley Family Farms for fresh produce and farm raised meats and in the fall be sure to visit the Indiana Pumpkin Patch, an eight acres of bright orange pumpkins.
